HEATSCOPE® infrared heaters for restaurants, hotels and cafés
BF Engineering presents infrared heating solutions for the hospitality sector. HEATSCOPE® infrared heaters provide targeted warmth for seating areas on restaurant and hotel terraces. The requirements of day-to-day operations shape the plan: heat should be available quickly, the heaters should fit the outdoor design, and the controls should suit the way each area is used.
The selection starts with the actual installation site. Covered terraces, open groups of tables and wind-exposed courtyards present different conditions. The model, number and position of the heaters are therefore chosen according to the occupied area, mounting conditions and desired atmosphere.
BF Consulting supported the development of the HEATSCOPE® PURE series from the technical concept through design and prototyping to production readiness. BF Engineering subsequently took over industrial series production. This page presents 5 different models.

The layout should begin with the places where guests actually sit. Tables at the edge of a restaurant terrace, a lounge area and the walkways between them are used in different ways. Heaters should therefore be directed towards occupied seating areas. Heating every part of a terrace equally is not always useful for daily operations.
Table arrangements, seating positions and possible mounting points need to be considered together. Changes during service matter too: if tables are regularly joined or an area is rearranged for events, the heating layout should accommodate that flexibility. Separately controlled zones allow staff to adjust the heat to current occupancy.
The five HEATSCOPE® models presented here differ in front design, heat output, visible light and IP rating. The characteristics that matter most depend on the terrace. VISION or PURE may suit a well-sheltered area where architectural integration is a priority. SPOT and NEXT are options to examine where wind exposure and quickly perceptible warmth carry more weight.
PURE+ adds flexibility through an interchangeable front: its glass front provides a restrained appearance, while the supplied protective grille allows a different heat output for changing conditions. SPOT has a louvred grille and directs heat towards the seating area; NEXT has a shaped grille and provides a broader heating area. The final choice depends on the specific mounting location, the area to be heated and the installation instructions.
On a restaurant terrace, table lighting, façade lighting and heaters all contribute to the evening atmosphere. Guests should feel the warmth without the heaters overpowering the intended lighting scheme. Visible light output therefore belongs in the selection process alongside heating performance.
VISION and PURE use glass ceramic fronts for a restrained lighting effect. PURE+ offers a choice between a glass front and a grille. SPOT and NEXT use protective grilles and place greater emphasis on heat that is quickly felt in more demanding outdoor settings. The visual effect is best assessed while the heaters are operating: a switched-off product alone cannot show how it will look above a set table.
A hospitality terrace is rarely fully occupied at all times. Separate heating zones allow tables near the building, an exposed edge and a lounge to be operated independently. This makes day-to-day control easier for staff and avoids heating unused seating areas.
The control approach should be decided early because it affects the product version and electrical plan:
- VISION and SPOT are available in versions for external control or with an IR remote control.
- PURE and PURE+ are designed for external control; suitable accessories provide further operating options.
- With several heaters, switching, electrical connections and the allocation of heating zones should be planned together.
If a building or terrace control system already exists, its technical compatibility should be checked before ordering.
In a restaurant or hotel, the installation must suit both the structure and daily operations. A pergola, awning or roof overhang does not automatically provide a suitable fixing point. Load-bearing capacity, adjacent materials, cable routing and exposure to weather must be checked at the proposed location.
The main planning points are:
- Mounting height, direction and minimum clearances for the selected model
- Load-bearing capacity and material of the wall, ceiling or pergola
- Electrical supply and location of the controls
- Rain and wind exposure at the actual mounting point
- Clear service routes and access for maintenance
An IP rating alone does not determine whether a heater may be installed in a particular location. The complete installation instructions for the selected HEATSCOPE® model apply.
| Model | Main application | Front | IP rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| HEATSCOPE® VISION | Sheltered seating area with very low visible light output | Glass ceramic | IP44 |
| HEATSCOPE® PURE | Design-led seating area; suitability depends on installation conditions | Curved glass ceramic | IP65 |
| HEATSCOPE® PURE+ | Flexible use with a glass front or grille according to the required heat output | Interchangeable glass front and grille | IP65 with glass front / IP25 with grille |
| HEATSCOPE® SPOT | Quickly perceptible, targeted heat for more wind-exposed seating areas | Louvred grille | IP24 |
| HEATSCOPE® NEXT | Broader heat output for more exposed areas | Shaped protective grille | IP25 |
